Tissue grinders disperse and disrupt small tissue samples by being repeatedly pressed or sqeezed between two hard surfaces. Usually, one surface is concave shaped (the mortar) and other convex (the pestle). The motar can also be test tube-shaped, in which case a tight-fitting pestle having a clearance of 0.1 - 0.2 mm is used. Tissue is repeatedly sqeezed through this mortar-pestle clearance.
Soft tissue samples with high water content (example; liver, muscle, fruits) frozen to and kept at dry ice- or liquid nitrogen temperatures are very easily fractured into powder using the crushing action of a motar and pestle. This special process is called cryogrinding.
Another catagory of mechanical homogenizer that also operates, at least in part, by similiar hard surface to hard surface grinding forces are beadbeaters (aka, bead mills).
The BioSqueezer is used to quickly freeze 10-100 mg of soft animal and human tissue. Fresh tissue is compressed into a thin disc about the size of a small coin under the pressure of a stainless steel clamp head that has been pre-cooled in liquid nitrogen or dry ice. Freezing occurs in a few milliseconds, thus giving a snapshot of metabolic events in the cells. The hard frozen disc is easily fragmented or ground without thawing for subsequent extraction of labile nucleic acids, proteins and intracellular metabolite products.
The Cryo-Cup Grinder is a mortar and pestle specifically designed to pulverize and powder plant and animal tissue samples at liquid nitrogen temperatures. It gives superior results compared to conventional ceramic mortar-pestles.

The CryogenicTissueGrinder is a high speed blade mill that grinds 0.5-10 grams of plant, animal and human tissue with high water content to a fine powder in the presence of dry ice. The tissue becomes brittle at solid CO2 temperatures. A sample hit with a hammer (or in the case of the CTG111, a spinning blade) fragments into tiny pieces in a matter of seconds.
