Bead Milling (Beadbeating) is the preferred laboratory method for disruption of cells to recover intracellular proteins, nucleic acids and organelles. It's fast, efficient, and safe.
First to introduce this method of cell disruption to the R&D laboratory in 1979, BioSpec Products now produces five different models of beadbeaters. Each is optimized for different sample size and capacity. Depending on the model chosen, 20 to 2000 samples can easily be processed in an afternoon. The models are divided into three catagories based on the way the beads are agitated:
The NEW SoniBeast™ bead mill uses a patent-pending bead mixing technology. It delivers much faster cell disruption (up to 10X) compared to conventional bead mill-type cell disrupters and can process smaller samples. The SoniBeast's capacity is twelve 0.6 ml microtubes or six 2 ml microvials.
There are four models of the Mini-Beadbeater™ cell disrupter. All use standard 3/4" - 1", back-and-forth shaking, wirh a "figure-8" pattern and have protcol-compatibity within the group. The original one microvial-capacity MiniBeadbeater-1 has been upgraded to the MBB-Plus. The MBB-16 and MBB-24 use both 2- and 7-ml microvials. The high through-put MBB-96 can process one or two deep well microplates, a rack containig 45 mcrovials, or a rack holding two 50 ml screw-cap tubes. Acceptible sample sizes for these disruptors range from 1 mg to 1.5 g (wet weight) of tissue or packed cells. Mini-Beadbeater shaking energies are very high and equal to or exceed all competitive brands of shaking-type bead mill.
The BeadBeater™ is a larger capacity beadbeater that can processes 10-80 g (wet weight) of microorganisms or monocellular plant or animal cells. Ratherr than shaking motion, a fast turning Teflon rotor agitates the beads within a sealed chamber. It is commonly used to disrupt cell suspensions such as yeast or bacteria for production of native or expressed intracellular proteins. Unlike most other lab cell disruption methods used, the "Beadbeater method" can easily be scaled up to pilot plant and full production levels.

The BeadBeater is the ultimate laboratory-scale homogenizer for disrupting aqueous suspensions of yeast, fungi or bacteria. Complete cell lysis of 10-80 g (wet weight) of cells is achieved in about three minutes of operation.

The Mini-Beadbeater-24 disrupts up to 24 microbial or tissue samples with better than 95 percent efficiency. Cells are disrupted quickly and safely in the sealed system. The apparatus is easy to clean, has a small footprint and is essentially maintenance free. Compared to the Minibeadbeater-16, the Mini-24 adds advanced electronics for enhanced motor function, variable speeds of 2400-3800 rpm and a 30% increase in microvial capacity.

The Mini-Beadbeater-96 is high-energy, high-throughput cell disrupter. It can process one 2 ml deep well micro plate (96 samples), two 1 ml deep well microplates (192 samples) or, using a included 45 capacity polypropylene microvial rack, 0.6, 1.5 or 2 ml microvials. In a busy day thousands of samples can be processed.

The NEW SoniBeast™ high energy bead-mill cell disruptor completely disrupts small samples of tissue or cells in seconds rather than minutes. It holds up to twelve 0.6 ml PCR microtubes each containing 1-100 mg of sample, or six 2 ml microvials each containing 10-400 mg sample. The SoniBeast is designed for wet milling in water-based media. Common applications are the isolation of intracellular protein and nucleic acids.
